A vast majority of the classes in the System.Windows namespace inherit from System.Windows.Threading.DispatcherObject. This includes all of the user interface controls. A DispatcherObject ties a normal System.Object instance to a specific Dispatcher. What this means in practical terms is that only the thread that the Dispatcher was created on can access this object. WPF generally has two threads running one for rendering and one for handling the UI and application code. Note that this second thread has more than one responsibility. If you try calling System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000) within the click event of a button, the whole user interface becomes completely unresponsive for 10 seconds. This is because the same thread that is responsible for updating the user interface is currently handling the button click event, which has instructed the thread to sleep. Ordinarily, this is not a problem. However, if your model or ViewModel receives an event from a thread that is not the UI thread, any attempt to update the UI will fail with an InvalidOperationException.
