You can find the current releases of the kernel at http://kernel.org (see Figure 11-1). This site is the canonical location of the Linux kernel sources and the hub of activity for the kernel project. Present on the site is every Linux distribution released along with links to the various mailing lists you can use to follow and participate in the project. There are three ways for you to get the kernel sources. Each is described in a brief section following the summary:

Note You ll sometimes see the term image hose to refer to animated brushes, especially in the Paintshop Pro world. The idea is that the brush is a hose that sprays out a stream of constantly changing images. Pipes (as in GIMP s dialog) and tubes are other ways of referring to animated brushes.

Download a compressed tar file: This is the traditional (as much as this term can be applied to open source distributed software development) method of getting the kernel sources. This archive contains a snapshot of the sources during the development cycle. When the kernel is released, a tar file is created with the sources constituting that release. If you want or need to get a certain version of the kernel (say, 2.6.31.2), this is the easiest method. Use Git to clone the repository: Git is a distributed source code control system used by developers (and by developers of other projects; Git is a general-purpose tool) for the kernel project. If you start from a Git repository, it s much easier to retrieve updates to the kernel release and incorporate them into your kernel tree.

Supplied by your vendor: You board vendor may supply you with some kernel sources. These could be supplied to you in any number of ways; this chapter assumes that sources supplied in this manner also include enough support that you can get them unpacked and in a place where they can be used for a build.

You ve probably used some of GIMP s built-in patterns by now. But you can get a pattern from a photo too. For instance, what if you want a pattern of spots copied out of a cheetah photograph (Figure 9-46)

But what if you have grammar that contains several keywords that sound similar For example, an airline reservation system may ask the user Where would you like to go The Speech Recognizer Engine might get responses like Las Vegas and Los Angeles or New York and Newark confused, depending on how clearly the user is speaking and the level of background noise. To address such issues, you can retrieve a list of possible alternatives that the Speech Recognizer Engine composed based on your grammar, along with individual confidence scores. Then you could prompt users to confirm their answer, like this: IVR: Where would you like to go User: Las Vegas IVR: Did you say Los Angeles or Las Vegas User: Las Vegas By default, the Speech Recognizer Engine returns a single result with the highest confidence score. To get alternatives, you use SpeechRecognizer.MaxAlternates to tell the Speech Recognizer Engine how many alternatives you would like. You can do this by overriding the Initialize method of the Voice Response Workflow application. For the example of two alternatives, you would add the following line of code:

This is the easiest way to get the sources. Just click the link, and wait for the download to complete; the waiting is the hardest part. After the download completes, you can unarchive the file by doing the following: tar xzf linux-2.6.30.1.tar.gz

Figure 9-46. Cheetah spots to use as a pattern The easiest way to test a pattern is to use the Clipboard pattern, which works just like the Clipboard brush. Copy your pattern, and it will automatically appear as the first item in the Patterns dialog, or in the Pattern Fill checkbox you get in the bucket fill tool (Figure 9-47). Drag from the Clipboard pattern into an image window, or use Edit Fill with FG Color.

The kernel version you download will likely be something different, but the format will be the same. A directory is created named after the tar file, sans the .tar.gz suffix.
