Certificates are issued from Active Directory to a domain user account In other words, the first time a user encrypts a file, Active Directory is queried and an EFS certificate is issued Active Directory provides extra protections in a domain Kerberos is the authentication protocol, and it allows different methods of authentication such as smart cards Additionally, if a user encrypted files and then left the company, an administrator can access the encrypted files using a designated recovery agent

A workgroup doesn t have Active Directory, so the only way an EFS certificate can be issued is by the local system A certificate issued to an entity by the same entity is referred to as a self-signed certificate In other words, if your computer issues a certificate to itself, the certificate is signed by the computer (self-signed) While a self-signed certificate works well on a single system, if you ever copy encrypted files to another system and want to access them, you won t be able to if your certificate is still on the original system What you can do is export the certificate from the original system and then import it onto the target system Self-signed certificates are stored in the Personal Certificate Store In Exercise 105, you will examine your Personal Certificate Store, create a certificate by encrypting a file, export the certificate, and then simulate importing it onto a different computer This exercise should be performed on a workgroup computer (not a computer joined to a domain) Exercise 105: Working with Self-Signed Certificates 1 Click Start, and enter MMC in the Start Search dialog box If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue 2 Select File | Add/Remove Snap-in Browse to the Certificates snap-in, select it, and click Add 3 On the Certificates Snap-in page, ensure My User Account is selected and click Finish Click OK 4 Open the Certificates snap-in and browse the Personal\Certificates folder as shown in Figure 10-27 5 Notice that you don t currently have an EFS certificate issued to you Leave this MMC open
